6 quick tips for artists managing their own social media

Every now and again, we’ll do our best to give you some quick fix tips and tricks. These are meant for the people out there who either don’t yet get social media in terms of using it to benefit their online profiles, or those who are new to scene. So lets kick things off…




1. Find your voice.

With so many communities online, how are you going to keep each one updated and stay on top of engagement? We’d say don’t bother. We’d say choose the networks you enjoy being in. Yes, a profile should still be maintained on the big platforms, but in our experience, artists who’ve stuck to one or two networks since day one continue to enjoy these communities.


2. Dress your shop window.

Whether you’re walking down a street or surfing the net, a shop’s facade will always trigger some kind of initial reaction. So, get your creative sorted out and synced up between platforms. If that look and feel generates a user click, then what? You want this potential or existing fan to get the best possible impression right? Who are you, what do you have to offer? With music the user journey is simple; what can I listen to? Do I like it? Can I stream or buy it? Where can I see this performed live? Done.


3. Have a chat.

So, you know what you’re saying, and you look the part. People are coming to talk to you, and will inevitably ask questions… just make sure you’re listening. Don’t be that person that goes to a party and talks about themselves all night. It’s boring, and unless you’re a stand-up comedian that tailors for a global audience, soon enough people will get bored of your chat.




1. Violate guidelines.

Unbeknownst to many, Facebook has some pretty strict guidelines, as does YouTube and many more platforms out there. If you break these guidelines, you run the risk of your platforms being pulled or shut down. Imagine that. Three years work, ad budget, countless competitions etc etc – all gone. Makes us feel a bit sick just thinking about it. Here’s the current* Facebook Page ones for you to get your head round if you haven’t already done so.


2. Buy fans.

Yep, people are still doing this. Yawn. Any promoter with an ounce of knowledge online will see through it. The engagement will not tally with the fan numbers. Fake fans don’t buy music, they don’t buy tickets and they certainly aren’t raving about you online. They will disappear though, often in large chunks. Kind of grim huh?


3. Sell sell sell.

Usually, fans are following you because they like the way you sound through speakers. Poor, over-promoted messaging gets old, really quickly. Get clever with your sales communications and tell it how it is. No-one can give you abuse for letting them know about a run of tour dates or a new EP. But if you tell them five times a day for a week, you’ve almost definitely sealed an “unfollow” click.
