You’ll remember the ice bucket challenge, sweeping our screens with the latest celeb or Facebook friend getting covered in, well… a bucket of ice.
The viral phenomenon has turned out to be much more than that this week. Originally created as a fundraising effort for ALS, the challenge raised $115 million in donations and has resulted in a break through in identifying the NEK1 gene that is among the most common genetic contributors to the disease.
